Bari old town (around the area of the port) is a real gem. A maze of windy streets, largely unspoilt by mass tourism. And at the centre of the old town is the basilica of St Nicholas. In medieval times, some enterprising Barese fishemen stole his remains from his home town in southern Turkey - they built a cathedral for him and there he remains. If you take advantage of RyanAir's cheap flights to Bari, go and eat at La Cecchina (31 Piazza Mercantile). Local food cooked to a very high standard. Friendly service, reasonable prices and excellent house wines. Why not take a few extra days and travel south to Conversano and Alberobello - lovely little towns with lots of atmosphers.
