The capital of British India, this megacity with a population of about 17 million will strike a chord with most people. It is the cheapest metropolitan city India and has a unique melange of cultures. Here you will find people from Rajasthan, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh as well. Kolkata street food is famous - but be careful as it is very spicy! If that is not for you try the vast array of sweets on offer - rasgullas are world famous. The ideal time to go is during September / October when the Bengalis celebrate their biggest festival Durga puja. They build beautiful statues to honour Goddess Durga. However, all roads and shops are extremely crowded at this time. Be sure to visit the Vidya Saagar Setu bridge.

(Report Problem)I wasnt in the City for very long. Only about 6 days. But it was amazing. The people are extremely welcoming and friendly. We stayed at the peerless inn, a nice hotel, which was located close to everything. I cant wait to go back!!

(Report Problem)I am very well travelled arpund India, and am yet to find anywhere that can match Kolkata. Yes there is pollution and poverty, but no more than the likes of Mumbai or Delhi. It is the only place I've been to where every street is tree lined, where there are incredible places to visit and where everyone greets you with a smile. There are fantastic places to eat, sleep and shop in Kolkata. The restaurants and hotels in particular are top notch. Kolkata is also the cultural capital of India, where theatre, music and dance are reknowned. It is a city where people are passionate about everything, and where people are able to talk about everything and anything with authority - the arts, politics, whatever. It is a truly wonderful city, there is something for everyone and I would challenge anyone who claims not to fall in love with this city.
Great for: History/Culture, Theatre/Music

(Report Problem)Kolkata is the City of Joy. The city is always buzzing with life - be it the roadside cricket match or the busy Dalhousie Office area or the congested traffic signals or a full house Eden Gardens, Kolkata is always beaming with the radiance of passion. The people there are great, have a big heart and welcomes one and all to their city with a big smile.

(Report Problem)Great City. Some of the best places are the theaters, Operas, Football Stedia, Victoria Memorial, Coffee Houses and Discos. To get the pulse of the city go to the bookfare or watch a cricket match or shop in newmarket or watch a movie in Globe. Best Restaurant : Bar-B-Q, Mainland China, Amber
