Historical and Charming

five stars

Aix is full of medieval style buildings and a fountain almost every 100 yards. It is a beautiful very civilised town, one that I have visited more than once. There are plenty of quality eateries, shops and a true atmosphere of Provence. It is great for walking around and if you spend a week there you will find it relaxing and with plenty to do in and around the area. It has a market on the Cours Mirabeau on some evenings and all day on saturday. You are able to buy the famous, and very good quality Marseille soap and freshly made lavender bags amongst many other locally produced items. Enjoy!

Menton - Off the Beaten Path

five stars

We stayed in a small town on the French-Italian border: Menton. Much more charming that the more frequently-visited cities like Nice, Cannes. Great location for visiting the more touristy cities and also Italian Riviera. Less expensive, less hype, much charm. If you want night-life-a-go-go, don't go here. But if you do choose this destination, be sure to go to the Village of Eze - wonderful trip to a village of old. Also go to the market (on Thursdays?) in Ventimilla (SP?) just over the border in Italy. And just explore the beautiful countryside.

Nice Nice

four stars

I visited Nice. I found the beaches disappointing, because there is no sand - only rocks, which are very hard on the feet. (I have since heard, however, that the beaches are better at Cannes.) The water is very warm, however, if you're willing to brave the rocks. The shops and restaurants are wonderful, however, and the art museums breathtaking. Worth a stop.
