I recently stayed at the Howard for two days at the end of a trip to Scotland with my mother. My only regret is that we were not there longer. The service was excellent: from check-in to a very early morning departure, there was no request or task that was not attended to. The Howard is the best of understated elegance. I sat in the library on a rainy afternoon, reading a book and enjoying a glass of red wine and a cheese plate. When next I asked for a glass of wine the following evening, the staff remembered what I had ordered the day before and wondered whether I wanted the same. The butler suggested he unpack for us and iron our clothes. If that's not enough to make someone return, I don't know what is except perhaps the excellent restaurant.
Great for: Beds, Luxury, Internet Connection

This is not anything like staying at a hotel! The Howard is situated on a street that looks like an 1800's movie set, complete with cobblestones. The hotel is unmarked save for a brass plate mounted by the front door. The service is impeccable and the personal service exhibited by the staff is something you will not get in a larger hotel. The downstairs contains the offices, dining room, and a large sitting room, all furnished with antiques. It is like stepping back to a different age. I cannot say enough about the friendliness of the staff. I highly recommend the Howard.
