When compared to the 5 star hotels in NYC the oriental comes out first in accomidations and particularly service. An anidotal story illustrates this point. I left my bags at the Oriental and traveled to chang mai for five days. Upon my return a clerk whom i had never seen before asked how my elephant safari had been. I was shown to my original room, bags delivered, massage and bath arranged and had dinner on the verranda. Upon return to my room a gift rapped box , orchid on top was sitting there. :compliments of the oriental hotel. In it were all my dirty clothes, underwear washed and ironed and individually placed in clear plastic oriental bags. I thought this was a nice touch to the end of a long day. I still show the under wear to guests thinking of travel to thailand. It is to me a world class family atmosphere hotel Nothing like it in the USA.

Ah, what can one say when you've found perfection? Gracious, over-the-top service. The Sawasdee welcome. How does the waitstaff remember my name after 10 minutes? How does the butler know when I've stepped out for 10 minutes and what I needed? A wonderful spa. Excellent meals. The opulent setting on the river. Then bidding goodbye "Mr. ____, please return soon. We will always hold you in high regard" Nothing anywhere can come very close.

I was highly dissapointed with The Oriental. I was given a non-smoking room even though I had booked a smoking. When checking in I told them a I had requested a smoking but they still put me in a non smoking. After calling the front desk they gave me a new room but no valet to bring my bags up. The toilet in the new room failed would not flush properly. This is supposed to be a top 5 Star hotel and things like this should not happen.

Unlike many of today's "5 Star" hotels, The Oriental offers luxury without pretentiousness. Our room was well appointed and beautifully decorated. The marble bathroom, with granite counters and high end fixtures, was elegant. The walk-in closet with deep shelving was great for all our stowage. You also get the feeling that the management and staff really do want to make sure that you are comfortable and welcome. The pool was a welcome retreat on the hot afternoons following our adventures. If we ever go back, we won't look elsewhere.

Spent time at the Oriental with my family. Everything was as good as could be expected and then some. Every night there was a custom desert with my young daughter's name etched or sprinkled in chocolate. What more can a Dad want?!

This is a great hotel. The location is fabulous - right on the river with an access point nearby. There is an arcade with shops / restaurants across the street. The service is great, the staff is so friendly. The rooms are beautiful. The restaurant is amazing - sit outside if the heat isn't too unbearable!

The standard by which all other top hotels are judged. The Oriental Bangkok is a beautiful hotel with an outstanding level of service and comfort. From 600 thread count sheets and spectacular city views, to hotel staff who know you by name as soon as you arrive, this is truly the only place to stay in Bangkok. Plus, Bangkok's best tailor is just around the corner...

When I decided to go to Bangkok, I had to stay at the Oriental. Why?
History! So many famous writers stayed here, I had imagined to sit, be
inspired, and perhaps write the next great novel... Well, I sat and was
inspired, but no book came from it. But the hotel was everything I hoped
for. I say it was two hotels in one because when we first arrived we were
sheparded up the elevators to a very nice but very modern room... I
thought to myself, this can't be right. I want romance, I want
mystery, I don't want a characterless room with a view. So I did what
any savvy traveller does - I complained. I specifically ordered a room in
the old part of the hotel, and with minimal fuss, was moved to a much
nicer, much more atmospheric room. This was more like it! It even had a
writing hutch semi concealed behind the entry stairs. The bed was
wonderful, the seating room delicious, and the view inspired.
Bangkok is a hectic place. The Oriental is an oasis by the river,
still a stopping place for travellers of all types, although generally a
bit more upscale travellers than those whose writings made the Oriental
famous.
