The Statue of Liberty is a must when visiting NYC! Whether you actually travel out to the island or simply take the Staten Island ferry and see the statue in passing, your time will have been well spent!

I loved it, the history, the beauty and the view. The boat trip out gave a wonderful view of New York. There is nothing like seeing if firsthand.

Friends told us to take the free Staten Island Ferry given we traveled with our kids. Great way to see the Statue of Liberty from a distance but still appreciate it. Some of the tours are longer and for us with our kids, they wouldn't have made it.

The statue looks much smaller in person that what I thought it would be, dont get me wrong, its huge is size just thought it was bigger. I had a great time there, once you get on the island, its peaceful because you have so much space to move around and visit. Getting there is another story. You have to wait in long lines and then cram into the boat.

We were here in early December 2004. It was a little chilly at 9:00 am. We chaperoned a high school group of teenagers - fifteen kids and six adults. The security personnel at the metal detectors would not allow our group to go through together so some of the group got on one ferry and the rest had to wait for the next ferry. Due to security concerns you don't get to go up to the crown of Lady Liberty anymore only up to the top of the base she stands on. At the giftshop were signs everywhere stating that you can ship your purchases home and to just ask any salesperson. We bought over a hundred dollars worth of knick-knacks and went through 5 salespersons and had to wait almost 20 minutes to get the shipping portion done. Even with all of that it is one of the most awe-inspiring sightseeing trips you can take in America. Standing on Liberty Island looking back at the Manhatten skyline should not be missed on any trip to NYC. Don't forget to take a gander at the Verrazano-Narrows bridge. WOW!
