The ultimate escapist resort, this place combines classic elegance with utter seclusion. The result is a lovely, peaceful hotel that seems to be (and in fact, nearly is) in a class by itself. The hotel is set in the tiny settlement of Hana Town, a few minutes' drive from waterfalls, sacred sites and legendary beaches. While the town itself offers almost nothing in the way of shopping or dining, the hotel's restaurant and gallery are among the finest on the entire island of Maui. The units are all either suites or cottages, and are spread over 66 acres of lush tropical gardens.

This hotel was all about location, location, location. It did take a while to drive the Hana Highway, but it was worth it, even if you're prone to car sickness. Upon walking up to check in, you're given fresh juice - a really nice touch. We were then driven in a golf cart to our huge bungalow (approx. 600 sq. ft.) overlooking a black sand beach on one side and a grassy area with horses on the other. Because our travel agent noted that it was our anniversary, we opened the fridge and found a bottle of champagne with a hand-signed note from the manager - another excellent touch. We ate at the restaurant many times (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) since there aren't too many dining options in town. It is expensive, but the food is nicely presented and tasty. This hotel ain't cheap, but if you're thinking about spending this kind of money, go for it.

But the Food was a nightmare. For each of the 4 nights we stayed there, we lamented the experience of dining in the hotel's restaurant (despite the great service.) We were told there was a "great new chef" heading up the kitchen. Unfortunately, I have experienced better "great new chef's" at places like Applebee's. (Really.) Applebee's probably also has better mai-tai's than Hotel Hana's bar. By all means visit the Hotel Hana, but as the saying goes "What's the best food in Hana? Whatever you bring in yourself."
