This historic South Loop mansion was designed and built in 1870 by Otis L. Wheelock for Calvin Wheeler, the former president of the Chicago Board of Trade. The current owners, Scott and Debra Seger, struggled to refurbish the red brick Italianate building, but managed to transform the old building into an 11-room boutique hotel. Guests are treated with extravagances befitting royalty. Beds are filled with goose down, and the meals, prepared by British chef Denise Renalds, are served on bone China. The Segers imported all of the furniture from Europe. They restored every inch of the building's interior, including the Minton-Hollins tiles on the floors of the guest bathrooms. This is, pound for pound, one of the nicest places to stay in all of Chicago, making it a good idea to book reservations well in advance of your visit to the Windy City.

The rooms are big and grand - very nice. The breakfast was poor - skip it and find another place. The lack of a railing on the steep outside stairs to the mansion was a problem. Overall, the place smacked of absentee management - adequate but lacked that extra touch that would send me back.
05 Jun 2005 | mbw97210I have stayed at alot of properties in chicago but this was one of the best times ever. The staff is increadibly friendly, the service was impecable, and the whole ambience of being in chicago but feeling not in chicago was just great. My family enjoyed it very much. I would stay again and again.
