The Gershwin will give you a taste of New York Bohemia. Images of pop art fill the place, such as a signed Andy Warhol Campbell's soup can. The rooms are minimalist but clean, and the bathrooms have distinctive tiling. This hotel has a TV room where guests can congregate or they can enjoy a drink at the bar. If you are on a tight budget you can stay in one of the four-person dorms for about $33 per person per night, a great deal for this convenient neighborhood.

I wonder if we stayed at the same hotel as the other reviewers. We stated there last may and found the hotel convenient, interesting and very affordable. The art work is excellent (although, as a traditionalist, it is not entirely to my taste) and the funky atmosphere is a plus. We found the rooms clean, all services fine and the service, while a little avant garde, fine! We loved the place and will stay there next time we come to New York.
05 Jun 2005 | A Yahoo! UserRun away! This is an awful place. The six of us stayed in the dorms because we were not told there was a family package. It was 17 degrees and there was no heat at all! We slept in our coats. The service was very weak, and even after repeated begging for heat no one cared. The walls are covered in amateur sponge painting from a terrible fauvist nightmare. The art (I am an art teacher) around the place is not really appropriate for kids to see; neither is the Sex Museum downstairs. \nThe neighborhood is not the safest. Shop around: for example, during Christmas 2004 week, the world-famous and beautiful Algonquin offers a room for $309; we paid 258+ per night at this place. Not such a big difference. \nThe noise from the 'club' keeps you up til the wee hours. \nThe place is not clean. One teenager became feverishly sick and threw up everywhere. Sweet revenge.
