Peacocks strut their stuff in front of this 17th century mansion, which became a hotel in 1959. It is almost at the foot of Arthur's Seat and is surrounded by Holyrood Park. A recent refurbishment has extended the building and added 26 luxury bedrooms. The grandeur of the architectural features is complimented by period portraits and furnishings. The Tapestry Room holds a special charm - the man who designed its ceiling, Sir William Adam, is also responsible for the decorated ceilings in the Holyroodhouse Palace. The Leather Room's walls are adorned with exquisite red Spanish hide. For golf enthusiasts, there is an 18-hole course next door.

The staff were terrific and the service superb. What a fabulous position.

This house is steeped in history. The staff are very knowledgeable regarding its origins and all seem to be intelligent. The rooms including restaurants and 'lounges' are plush with atmosphere and of remarkable interest. The facilities in the room are perfect and of good quality. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff. This house is perfect for a romantic holiday. I will definitely be returning.
