The "French Hotel" dates back to 1610, making it the oldest in the city and a national historical monument. Within the context of the historic district, it is only steps away from the Palacio de Gobierno de Jalisco, the Cathedral, museums, Instituto Cabañas, San Juan de Dios market, Plaza de los Mariachis and the Teatro Degollado. The colonial-style architecture of the old Mesón de San Jose has been the choice of business travelers, politicians, writers and artists through the years. Live mariachi music and traditional dance performances take place in the lobby on Fridays from 8p to 9:30p, and the hotel houses the discotheque, Maxim's.

We stayed there last July, after staying one night in another Hotel friends had recommended. It has a good balance of original character and modern functionality; it is well kept. The location is perfect for just parking your car and exploring the downtown historic area on foot. I liked the high ceilings, would recommend 3rd floor, to keep noise down, we even stayed on a very nice hugh suite on the 4th floor for $80. US. We are artists, Jack (former head of Cultural Affairs Austin TX) and Sabina (originally from Chihuahua City), and are planning to stay there again New Year's.
