Famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright has said that the Claremont is one of the few hotels in the world with warmth, character and charm. The staff will go out of its way to charm you at this white jewel nestled in the foothills of Berkeley. On the grounds of what was once an English-style castle (built with Gold Rush money), this sprawling white, Mediterranean-like villa was constructed in 1915 and has served guests with its gracious elegance, luxury and style ever since. A full spa service was added in the late 1980s.

I would not go back and pay that kind of money.

I was very disappointed beginning with my arrival. i live in Santa Clara, so I have a chance to come back for a break. I arrived. The guy at the gate was reading and wouldnt open the door til I honked the horn. I drove to the door and took out my own clothes! \nI registered. \nI got my room which was v ery nice and quiet. The staff was very unhappy, I could tell and when I mentioned it to one of them at breakfast she told me some of the problems the hotel was having. \nI had jewelry with me and I had to ask the staff to open the door every morning and every night. \nI have been in Vegas hotels and others who had safes. It is not that I didn't know how to work it. it just didn't work. i asked them to fix it. In the 2days I was there It never got fixed. \nI had a pair of pants I needed to iron. I ironed it and the bottom of the iron was black and came off on a brand new pair of pants that had just been dry cleaned! It was a disaster. \nThey did clean them, but all of it never came off. it is still on there in part. \nAt night the bar was frightening. I am white and I was intimidated into leaving by a black man who had a friend who couldn't find a seat. it was fine in the afternoon but by 7:30 it was all black and they were very aggressive. They also scared off the 2 white people I was talking to. I had a nice chair and table and they moved in aggressively. Suggesting that I might want to go to my room and " your mother is calling"! I was really upset and offended. i was a woman alone and they figured they could get away with it. \n \n I was very upset by the experience and I doubt I would go back there,. \n \nT

Noisy picket line

When I stayed there a few weekends ago, there was a large group of people picketing the hotel. It was very disturbing and noisy as all get out. My husband and I went down to ask what was happening and as it turns out, there is a labor dispute at the hotel. The employees there have marches and pickets frequently, so I recommend that people staying in the area pick somewhere else to go. I thought the service was great, but I know that the people are not being treated well, and when that is happening, it creates a less than perfect environment in which to stay.
